BERKELEY —

In the beginning there was (some) recycling.

But there was no zero-waste target or green-department certification process. No Cal Dining sustainable-seafood certification or Green Initiative Fund. No climate-action, bicycle or water-use reduction plan. No greenhouse-gas inventory. No energy-incentive program, Power Agents or LEED-certified buildings.

Over winter break, 1,100 turn-off-the-light stickers as well as turn-off-the-light posters were put up in Residence Hall 1. Overall, through the months of January, February and March 2013, Residence Hall 1 used less energy than its twin: Residence Hall 2. While Residence Hall 1 shows a baseline of 158kW and Residence Hall 2 shows a baseline of 148 kW, Residence Hall 1 reduced energy more than Residence Hall 2 after the stickers were put up, as showed in the image below. Even the little things-like stickers-can make a difference!

Very little shocks me anymore. But I was shocked – SHOCKED! – to discover that one space in our house which takes up only about 5% of the floor space draws more than 20% of the KWH our house consumes in a day.

Can you guess which room this is? It is the space my family calls the “home office.”

For almost two decades, large parts of campus have taken a long break at year’s end – and taken steps during that break to curtail energy use. In recent years, this has meant lowering or shutting off heating and ventilation in some buildings and also sending reminders to staff to turn off lights and equipment.

The annual holiday energy curtailment is coming soon. Heating and ventilation will again be turned down or off on the Berkeley campus from Saturday, Dec. 22. through Tuesday, Jan. 1; faculty and staff are encouraged to stay away from campus for the duration.

Buildings scheduled for heat and ventilation curtailment can be found on the physical plant website. Normal electric service will be maintained. Last year’s curtailment saved 300,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity and 3,400 therms of steam, for costs savings of about $59,000.

As part of the green building program for the campus, a recent renovation of a lab in Morgan Hall recently achieved LEED Gold® certification.  In order to do so, the project received 7 of 12 possible energy credits – making it an interesting case study for how to achieve energy and sustainability goals for lab renovations.  More information on the technical – and behavioral – aspects of the project can be found in an article written by the College of Natural Resources.

CNR Achieves LEED Gold® on the Morgan Hall Laboratory Renovation. A first for UC Berkeley!
